(04 - GV 5 on 5 Day 2 210 of 225)

2015 Champions – Whatev 2.0 – (Vancouver/Victoria/Calgary)

The first version of The Great Vancouver 5 on 5 took place Aug 29-30 in Richmond, BC. Sixteen teams competed over the variable weather weekend…..

After a long dry summer, it looked like we were in for a wet weekend with 80 mm of rain forecasted. Instead, gusting winds of up to 70 km per hour on Saturday downed 3 tents and a tree in the distance. As for the ultimate being played, well, it was comical at times… Gusts erratically lifted the disc out of reach of what seemed like an easy catch, and some teams struggled to reach half in some games. Nonetheless, we persevered in what will be a day to remember and forever be known as “Winderday”.

(02 - GV 5 on 5 Day 1 44 of 97)Fortunate players returned to their homes and hotels with power, others were among the 300,000 without any. The good news was that the party venue – The Railway Club in downtown Vancouver, had power and party-goers had the joy of flowing Red Truck Beer, fun party games, and shirtless dancing to close the bar down.

Sunday was the calm after the storm – no rain and only mild wind was a pleasant surprise. The top seeds in A Pool were “Whatev 2.0”, a finalist at the recent Whistler 5 on 5 tournament, and long-time Vancouver team “Like a Simile”. Both teams marched through their bracket into the final. Whatev 2.0 was the clear favourite. They executed as they had all weekend, winning the championship and maintaining their undefeated record.
